Zeitgeist Documentary Workshop at Silver Bay Library with Jacob White

Learn the fundamentals of Documentary Storytelling in this hands-on workshop designed for beginners. All are welcome to participate! Students will explore the basics of documentary filmmaking:

– Idea Development and Research
– Interviewing
– Camera & Lighting Techniques
– Editing Basics

No prior experience required—just curiosity and a passion for using film to tell your stories. By the end of the workshop, participants will have the skills and confidence to begin creating their own short documentary projects.

The level is Beginner – no prior experience needed! Ages 16+

About the Instructor:

Jacob White

Jacob lives and works in the Ely area of far Northern MN. He owns and operates White Pine Productions, a video production company that collaborates with organizations and businesses whose work is rooted in shared community values. Jacob received his education at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts – Maurice Kanbar Institute for Film and TV, where he cut his teeth working on all kinds of productions and as a community organizer.

FILM WORKSHOP FOR GIRLS!
@ TWO HARBORS HIGH SCHOOL

A hands-on, beginner-friendly course for high school girls introducing the basics of filmmaking, from story to planning to producing a film – in a supportive, creative environment.

Topics Include:

  • Story Structure! Understanding what makes a good story and how to tell it
  • Camera Basics! Composition, framing, exposure, and movement
  • Lighting Fundamentals! Natural vs. artificial light, simple setups for
    interviews
  • Audio Essentials! Microphones, sound quality, and avoiding common
    mistakes
  • Editing Review! Organizing footage, cutting for clarity and emotion, basic software tools

The level is Beginner – no prior experience needed!

About the Instructor:

Megan McGarvey

Megan McGarvey is independent Documentary Director and Producer. Born and raised in the Midwest, Megan developed a passion for looking beyond the stereotype and to capture the authentic stories of her community creating films such as Outsourced: The New Wisconsin Idea, Unweaving, On By, and the Gunflint Mailrun.
With three regional Emmys®, Megan continues to use her expertise in producing documentary, commercial, and lifestyle productions for companies such as KARE 11, & PBS North to keep her hands in every stage of production.

The Zeitgeist Minnesota Media Arts School, in partnership with the Minnesota Discovery Center, is an affordable option for the Northland’s diverse creative community ranging from filmmakers, graphic designers, multimedia artists, and theatrical artists to learn, work, create, and connect. With teaching hubs in Chisholm and Duluth, we will add important contributions to the regional film ecosystem. 

Our goal is to empower, support, and educate Northland community members ages 16+ as active participants in shaping our culture, and engage diverse communities to rethink the way we view film, art, and local storytelling. We provide access and a platform to work, learn, create, and experience filmmaking and media production in our community.
