CAFE FEATURED ARTIST

A Collection of Regional Photographs
by Kerry Gauthier

Artist Statement:

I was born and raised in Duluth, Minnesota. I have lived here most of my life, with a short stint in the twin cities. I came back a few years after college to complete a master’s degree in counseling at the University of Wisconsin – Superior. Reality is that Lake Superior, the Big Water, called me home. Grad school was just a bonus.
I began my photography in the early 1980’s and was lucky enough to sell a few photographs. I got busy with grad school and my career and photography fell by the way side. I picked up again five years ago when a friend asked if I wanted to tag along while she took some photos. I said yes and promptly went out and bought a new camera for the day trip.
I have primarily focused on landscapes and particularly Lake Superior and the region. I have always felt a spiritual connection to The Big Water and the land around it. Lake Superior is so spiritual and she speaks to me. Every time I go out on a photo shoot, I feel a sense of serenity and peace. Lake Superior has infinite moods and can change right before your eyes. Every day the lake and the land around it are different. When you spend a lot of time around the lake you pick up on the subtle not so subtle changes that occur daily.
I have spent a lot of time at the Duluth Canal. You will see numerous photos of the canal and the light houses. You will also see how dramatically different each day can be in these images. If I am lucky enough I get to capture some of that spiritual connection in photography.
I hope to convey a message with my photography that we live in a very special place. Hopefully, it will remind people the need to protect Lake Superior and the land. It is our responsibility to pass on to the generations after us the special beauty and purity of Lake Superior.
