Shakespeare’s bloodiest drama of fate, murder, and witches will be presented as a dinner party. Actors will be speaking this timeless language directly to an audience seated in close proximity and without a “fourth wall”. Food and drink will be served and witty banter spoken during act breaks. Director Bio: Robert Lee has been living in Duluth, MN for the past 11 years and in that time he’s directed, acted, written, produced, and designed for The Underground Theatre, The Duluth Playhouse and their TYA and children’s Theatre, Renegade Theatre Company, Renegade Comedy, The Nor Shor Theatre, and several independent productions. Robert loves Duluth and its theatre scene and community.

Note from the Director:
This concept of Macbeth presented as a dinner party has been living and developing in my head for the past 15 years. Witches mixing cocktails just always sounded fun to me. But it was about 6 or 7 years when I was handed a copy of a book called My Life with the Shakespeare Cult about Chicago’s The Backroom Shakespeare Project, that this plan was put into motion. The idea of including the audience in the performance of Shakespeare’s plays the same way that they did at the time they were written was pivotal in me deciding to produce and perform in the play. The production was set in The Underground for May 2020, the lines were learned and fight choreography taught. So many things were canceled by the pandemic and this was one of them, well, I guess it was delayed. I’m excited to tackle this daunting project with some of Duluth’s bravest performers.

When auditioning please choose a Shakespearean text you know well, ideally memorized, but definitely one you know well. You will be speaking directly to the group that surrounds you. This production is going to be fun, so have fun with your audition and with the rest of the group. Speak in your own true voice to the group as if they are your friends. Be brave and own the space you are in.
